Al-salam 'alaykum!

I just confronted a person in "chat" who had no idea how to post in this forum or reply. I thought if we can have a sticky thread upfront, which can guide the novices/beginners about how to use the site. As I also remember when I was new to the internet forum thing years back then, it would be hard for me to figure out things. :) Anyways just a suggestion.#laugh

I suppose you're right. Though I think patience is the only thing that can really help someone when it comes to learning how to use this forum.

When it comes to trying to tell someone where the "post reply" button is, it won't really matter how we spell it out for them, they'll still have to find it on their own.

The moderators are here for everything else, such as where to post a thread, when to make a new thread, when to sticky a thread, etc. For people who are brand spankin new to the internet as a whole, it won't make a difference if we make such a thread, they'll still be somewhat lost.

One thing I think everyone should be aware of from the start though, is the fact that this isn't a Pakistani website. Nor is it a Muslim website. Therefore, whenever someone posts outside of the Pakistani Medical School section, they shouldn't be posting in anything other than English, and there's no need for a salam at the beginning of each post. It makes it pretty confusing for all the non-Pakistani members of this site, and somewhat limits our expansion.

Yeah I agree, we might have to work on making this site more usable for people who are just getting their feet wet.

For now there is the "FAQ" button up on the top toolbar which helps answer some questions, but we may need to broaden the answers that it has.

Good suggestion Jamal :)

haha I know this is a beginner question, but how exactly do you delete posts? I don't see any option when you click "edit" for a post you've typed. I unsuccessfully tried to delete one under "last movie you've seen" in the MedStudentz lounge because I accidently double posted.

Members don't have the option of deleting posts because going back and deleting old posts would leave gaps in the threads. Probably a bit annoying when you want to actually delete it for the right reasons, but it's the easiest way to safeguard the threads from renegade members. #laugh

I think that once a new member makes an account, he/she should be told to search the forum before they post a question or make a new thread for a topic already being discussed. I think we've all noticed that a new member will come and ask a question, and there is a whole thread on that certain topic just a few scrolls down. The reason I love this site so much is because of the organization, and the great community of members. Other medical forums will have the same question posted 50 times in different places, and its hard to understand the anything. Keep up the great work moderators! You are all doing a great job!

ya you are right. beginners should be told to search the forums, but its not quite easy to go thru the forums. if any beginner tries to go thru he will only go thru casually and might not get wat he want. but i think moderators and other members are helpful enough to guide him to go to appropriate topic, which is i think the speciality of this site only. in other sites no one bother to answer any question. keep it up.

I think the new FAQ section should greatly reduce the number of repetitive questions since it hits all the big ones and it's the first thread there right when you click on "Pakistan Medical Schools." I don't know how much simpler it could get, especially for those who want quick answers without searching.

My bad, I'll be better about that from now on.

ah come on..i know there may not be a "need" to post salaam in the begining of every post but you have to admit it adds a little "niceness" to the post...the majority of people know what salam means..and if they are so curious they should ask..i know this is a medical forum and people do come here to gain info on the medical field but learning how to say peace in another language can also be considered a learning experience. but hey that is only my opinion.

oh n salaam

You're right, but it's not needed. This isn't a Muslim website, nor is it a Pakistani one, but since there's already such a huge base of members out of those two categories, it confuses new users who might not fit into either one. We don't want them to shy away from the site for that reason-- because of that we'll be moderating posts outside of the Pakistan Medical Schools section that aren't in English.

Thanks for your understanding guys.

I agree. I wasn't aware of the growing number of members from all around the world on this forum, so I'm glad MastahRiz clarified that for me. I think he has a good point though. There's nothing wrong with "Salam," but since not everyone is familiar with the term and this is an open forum, you don't want to make anyone feel left out or uncomfortable so you should consider leaving it out for that intent.

Instead of using quick reply, click on "Go Advanced" and scroll down to the "Additional Options" area where you can click on "Manage Attachments". From there you can attach images.
